We run three men’s teams, three ladies teams and a veterans team (over 35s). We play in the West Asia Premiership, UAE Premiership and the Emirates Dubai Sevens. We are always looking for motivated players and welcome anyone looking to play rugby in the United Arab Emirates, however, as an amateur side we do not offer players contracts where they are financially remunerated. Frequently Asked Questions What is the level of rugby played in Abu Dhabi? The 1st Team Mens is a reasonably high level and would stand with the highest level of non-professional rugby in any league. But we offer all standards and run 7 teams (men’s, women’s and vets). Why Would I come to Abu Dhabi? Abu Dhabi is a vibrant city, expanding hugely and offering great opportunities. It is also a great steppingstone for those looking for second passports in Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Can you help me with flights/accommodation etc? We cannot help you with flights or accommodation, but your employer will. How does the job process work? Once you send us your CV we 1) cross-check it against the jobs the members have sent us (a huge number) 2) send it to multiple employers in Abu Dhabi 3) send it to recruiters we have relationship with. We don’t control whether you get a job or not. They may shortlist, interview and offer you a position - or they may not. We’ll do our best but can’t make any promises. Also you don’t have to take the job offered, there is no commitment. Is Abu Dhabi Livable? Abu Dhabi isn’t Saudi, it is a very liberal city. Alcohol is legal and reasonably priced, and unmarried couples can live together. People dress however they please and bikinis on the beach is the norm. What is the Cost of living? This will vary depending on the person but accommodation in a share flat will be about 3,000 dirhams a month (about 800 USD), your own flat will start around 3,750 per month (1,000 USD). A crate (24 x 500ml) of beer is about 150 dirhams (40 USD), pint of beer in a bar is 25-45 AED (7-12 USD) and basic car rental is about 1,500 dirhams per month (about USD400). And your income is tax free. What facilities does Abu Dhabi Rugby Club offer to players? We play in the premier sports facility in the UAE. You have never seen pitches of the quality we have in Zayed Sports City. Is it hot? We play Rugby in the winter (September to March when the temperature doesn’t get above 35C and as low as 15C). It is scorching in summer though. Are there opportunities for both men and women to play rugby in Abu Dhabi? Yes we will try and find jobs for men and female players. Is there a community or social aspect to Abu Dhabi Rugby Club? We are a very social club and have huge groups of players from the UK, Ireland, South Africa, France, Fiji, Australia, new Zealand and others. Can I bring my family with me? This will depend on your job offer but generally yes, players are welcome to bring their families with them. The school system in Abu Dhabi is very good. What is the visa process for playing rugby in Abu Dhabi? To play for Abu Dhabi Harlequins you must be a resident and therefore hold a work visa. Once you secure a job offer your company will advise you on this. |
