Welcome to the Abu Dhabi Harlequins
The Abu Dhabi Harlequins, also known as the Quins, are one of Abu Dhabi’s longest running sporting clubs. We are a grass roots, not-for-profit club that is run by volunteers. All fees go directly towards the cost of running the club.
The Abu Dhabi Rugby Union Football Club was established in 1970 and was a founding member of the Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union, which is now the UAE RF. We were then called the Abu Dhabi Bats Rugby Club. We changed the name to Abu Dhabi Harlequins Rugby Club in 2008 when we became affiliated with the London Harlequins – but the badge still bears the bat logo. When the club was founded we acquired the name ‘The Bats’ because it was so hot we started off playing on the beach under a street lamp in the dark – like bats.
We’re really proud that Quins have gained a reputation as a warm and friendly multicultural club with great team spirit, determination, enthusiasm and passion for the game.
In Memory of Angus Woodhead
As we open the new season this year, we do so with very heavy hearts. Angus Woodhead, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Harlequins, tragically and unexpectedly passed away at the end of June. His unexpected departure leaves a deep void in the hearts of his family, friends, the club and the entire rugby community.
Angus and his family have been stalwart members of Quins, dedicating many years to the sport he loved dearly. His leadership as Chairman was marked by unwavering commitment, passion, and a steadfast dedication to the success of the club. Taking over the reins as Chairman 2 years ago, Angus emanated the Quins ethos through and through. He prioritised respect, sportsmanship and a sense of community, taking great pride in the opportunity to have an impact on the kind of adults our children grow into.
Outside of his roles on the field as Coach and in the boardroom as Chairman, Angus was a beloved husband to Candice and a devoted father to his children, Bella and Harrison. His family was the center of his world, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Candice, Bella and Harrison and it goes without saying that Angus will always be in our hearts, and you are in our thoughts.
Angus leaves behind a legacy of passion, leadership, and a deep-rooted love for rugby that we hope will continue to inspire those who had the good fortune of knowing him. Quins mourns the loss of someone whose impact will forever be felt within the club and beyond.
